Sporting Kansas City striker Alan Pulido and LA Galaxy midfielder Jonathan dos Santos have been selected by head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino to join the Mexican national team.

The two players will join the squad for their 2021 CONCACAF Nations League finals games in Denver in June. El Tri faces Costa Rica first on June 3, and either United States or Honduras in the final or third-place match three days later.

The camp will conclude with a friendly on June 12 against Honduras at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Martino recently praised the two players in a press conference, making their call up to the 23-man roster no big surprise.

Pulido has recorded five goals in 14 appearances for Mexico, most recently standing out during El Tri’s draw against Algeria last October. He made his international debut in 2014 against South Korea, where he scored a hat-trick to secure a 4-0 win.

The striker is hungry for more international recognition though after success in MLS. So far this season, Pulido has scored four goals and provided one assist in seven games. His phenomenal efforts on the pitch have also earned him back-to-back MLS honors.

Pulido most notably represented Mexico at the 2011 Copa America in Argentina and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Dos Santos, on the other hand, is a Mexican national team veteran. He made his international debut in 2009 at the age of 19, and has since then won 46 caps. Dos Santos featured for Mexico in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, 2018 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup.

The midfielder has been crucial in LA Galaxy’s success this season. He’s scored one goal in seven matches and provides much needed stability in the midfield.

Dos Santos and Pulido will join El Tri after their respective MLS matches this weekend.
