Juventus are closing in on the re-appointment of Massimiliano Allegri as manager, and are expected to announce it imminently.

Juve are expected to part company with Andrea Pirlo after a disastrous 2020/21 season that saw their stranglehold on Serie A come to an end. They finished fourth, some 13 points behind eventual winners Inter, and only qualified for the Champions League on the final day of the season.

Their struggles have led to longstanding speculation that Allegri could return to the job after two years out of management. The legendary coach stepped aside after leading them to five straight titles between 2014-2019, and there has been a growing clamour for his return ever since.

Neither Pirlo or Maurizio Sarri have been able to adequately replace him in the eyes of the fans or the board, and Italian media have this week stepped up their claims that the second Allegri era is on the horizon.

And despite reports that Inter are also interested after the departure of Antonio Conte, Gianluca Di Marzio now suggests a deal is imminent.

There’s not much room for nuance in his tweet, which consists of Allegri’s name, Juventus’ Twitter handle and an hourglass emoji, and it seems that Allegri’s reappointment could be officially confirmed later on Thursday.

What it means for Pirlo remains to be seen. A Juve legend in his own right, he has struggled to get to grips with top level management, but he is expected to remain in the game.

Reports have suggested he could take over at Sassuolo after the departure of Roberto De Zerbi, who took over at Shakhtar Donetsk earlier this month.

De Zerbi leaves Sassuolo in a strong position after successive eighth-place finishes and it could be the place for Pirlo to cut his teeth in management outside of the glare of Turin.
