The United States Women’s National Team will face Mexico twice in the WNT Send-Off Series prior to the Olympic Games.

The matches will take place on July 1 and July 5, both at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Though Olympic rosters have yet to be announced, those on the 18-player lists will feature in this series. Immediately after the game, both sides will travel to Japan to compete in the delayed games.

“These are games to work on the final details, to once again give our players a chance to play with their position groups and areas on the field and to make sure our fitness is in the right place heading into our pre-Olympic training camp,” said U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Vlatko Andonovski.

“Mexico is a team that has larger ambitions as it prepares for the run-up to the 2023 Women’s World Cup so we know they will give us two tough tests, which is what we need to continue to sharpen our team before we leave for Japan.”

The matches will be played in the same venue to ensure the efficient execution of U.S. Soccer’s COVID-19 protocols.

There is a rich history of rivalry between the two teams, intensifying the series.

The international sides first faced each other in 1991 during the CONCACAF Championship. Since then, there have been 39 matches with intense goals and phenomenal plays.

Their historic game in 2010 during the Women’s CONCACAF Championship semi-finals continues to haunt the USWNT. Mexico entered that match as a complete underdog against the women’s soccer giants with zero expectations and walked out with a fantastic 2-1 victory.

The USWNT got their revenge several times since, but most recently in their last match on February 7 2020, where the Americans triumphed 4-0.
